Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto wins First Place in The Best Italian Restaurants in The World 2022
Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto is the best venue for Italian cuisine outside of our national borders. This has been declared by the The Best Italian Restaurants in the World 2022 – Prosecco DOC Award classification. This ranking is part of the 50 Top Italy brand, the noteworthy, freely accessible online guide that was created by LSDM, the International Congress of gourmet cooking, and by the journalistic publication Luciano Pignataro Wine&Food Blog.
The Canadian venue of the historic locale on the Sorrento Penninsula owned by the Laccarino family has topped this year’s ranking. It was followed by Fiola in Washington, DC, the flagship restaurant of chef Fabio Trabocchi. In third place is Da Vittorio Shanghai, another great in the tricolor restaurant sector, which has ties to the Cerea brothers of Brusaporto. Also in the top five are Otto e Mezzo – Bombana, in Hong Kong, and Sesamo, in Marrakesh.
A series of Special Awards have also been conferred. Massimiliano Sena, from the Il Lago restaurant in Genevra, captured the Chef of the Year 2022 – Pastificio dei Campi Award. The important Innovation and Sustainability 2022 – D’Amico Award was given to Osteria 57, in New York. The Ornellaia restaurant in Zurich has won the Best Wine List 2022 – Prosecco DOC Award. Nino Graziano, who is head chef at Semifreddo, claimed the Inspirational Model 2022 – D’Amico Award. Finally, our first-place winner, Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto, also took home the Lunch of the Year 2022 – Mulino Caputo Award.
Of the 50 venues present in the ranking, 7 are located in the United States and another 7 in France. Both the United Kingdom and Japan are represented by 5 restaurants in the classification, China by 3, Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland and Singapore all have 2, and with one restaurant each are South Africa, Sweden, Spain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Russa, Austria, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark and Morocco. There is a total of 23 countries represented in the classification, and each, therefore, has at least one great restaurant of Italian cuisine.

What we do note in particular, however, is that in recent years there has been a significant rise in the average quality. The stereotypes and the false traditions that have surrounded the gastronomic culture of the Bel Paese are slowly making an exit, and so foreigners are now finally managing to discover authentic Italian flavors, even outside of our Peninsula. And it is certainly no accident that this award has Prosecco DOC, a globally successful brand, as its protagonist. It is a bonafide ambassador of Italy for the entire world.”
