To discover a little piece of Japan in Milan, you need to go to Maido in Via Savona 15. It is also known as Zio Marrabbio’s restaurant. It was inspired by the cartoon Kiss Me Licia, and its flavors and fragrances take you straight to Osaka. The Okonomiyaki, the cat Giuliano’s favorite frittelle, are a house specialty. They are also known as “pizza di Osaka” and are made with a base of flour, eggs and cabbage to which diverse ingredients are then added such as meat, cheese, spinach and shrimp. The dish is then finished with a Okonomi sauce (a Japanese mayonnaise), leaves of green algae, and bonito shavings. We tried the version with pork. The octopus meatballs were tasty and the little salmon rice burger was excellent.
The locale is intimate and welcoming with limited seating. The staff is attentive and quick; orders are taken at the register. There is an excellent price/quality ratio. We highly recommend Maido for those who wish to try Japanese food while conveniently staying in Milan!
